About

Projects

What I am presenting you with is a work work in progress.  It is my intent to update this apologia to reflect any new developments.  I welcome any feedback - I'm not an unreasonable person - just give me something to be reasonable about.

object ∆ intent
Art is the culmination of object and intent.

Creative Practices
People know what they do; they frequently know why they do what they do; but what they don't know is what what they do does.

It has been suggested that I change the landing page (the 'home' page) of my website in order to provide a more comprehensive introduction into what it is I am trying to do.  The idea being (or so I'm told) is that the user should not have to "click around as much" in order to find key material that would aid them in their understanding of my work.

I can't help but be reminded of one of my eighth grade teachers, Mrs. Ankerberg, telling our class: "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink."  On one hand, I find the suggestion perfectly reasonable and have been making changes to the layout.  On the other hand, "understanding" is, in my opinion, a responsibility that begins and ends with the individual.  If you're unwilling to explore - whether it be through clicks on a website or the development of an idea - this place is not for you.  Go awayOr stayThe water is yours for the taking.

There are two elements on this website that contribute to my work in a significant way: the Lexicon and Works and Days.  I don't mean to suggest that the other elements don't contribute - everything here has a role - it just happens that these specific two merit some additional consideration.

At first glance the Lexicon is a collection of sourced material.  I'm using the Lexicon as a hupomnēmata - a use based on my interpretation of Foucault's interpretation of the Greco-Roman interpretation of the hupomnēmata.  I find the Lexicon, when approached in this manner, to be a particularly valuable creative practices exercise.  Where people are accustomed to receiving a cake, I provide the ingredients.

Works and Days - the title taken from Hesiod's poem of the same - continues to present a number of challenges: naming the work, organizing and presenting related material, constructing a sustainable narrative - to name a few.  It is important for me that people see my work as a collection of related ideas and not something that ends with the photograph.  Determining the best method for presenting the photograph and written material as a single, unified element continues to be one of my primary objectives.

Aretaic: Better Person.  Better World.

Aretaic, from the Greek aretē, is normally translated as virtue.  The term signifies excellence, i.e. a quality the possession of which either constitutes the possessor as, or causes it to be, a good instance if its kind.

Studio Visits (The Thinkpot)

The Thinkpot is the name of my Maryland studio where I conduct Sessions. The name is taken from the play "Clouds" by Aristophanes

As of October 2017 the space is undergoing renovations that are expected to be completed late-2017.
